Nanette Lepore X Thompson Hotels

A sketch of the dress

The uniform, a sexy black cocktail dress, is for 3 Thompson properties nationwide: Thompson LES in NYC (Above Allen lounge), Donovan House in D.C. This is the first time Thompson has worked with one designer across Thompson properties, all for their outdoor venues for the summer!

Linn Olofsdotter

She was born in Sweden, worked in Brazil and is now settled in the Portland area. The prolific illustrator and mixed-media artist Linn Olofsdotter is a global citizen of the most interesting kind. Her own life in different locales gives her many sources of inspiration and most likely helps her flex her illustration muscle to meet the needs of a vast variety of clients.

Her work has appeared in Computer Arts and Bon Magazine; she’s created T-shirt graphics for Levi’s, wall murals for a hotel in Los Angeles, CD covers for artists and illustrations for Oilily and La Perla. Nearly all of her work has a collage-like feel, with many layers, nuances and media. The somewhat surreal and psychedelic look of some of her pieces attests to her ability and willingness to trot not just the globe but regions beyond.

Nick Knight’s Downloadable Prints

In the recent issue of Dazzed magazine did a spread on Nick Knight’s eye catching prints, and I thought to myself how wonderful these prints would be as wallpaper for my room. Well, it may not be wallpaper, but this might be the next best thing. Until this Sunday, December 7, you can download photographer Nick Knight’s a gorgeous giant monochrome print featuring Gareth Pugh’s Spring/Summer ‘09 collection, For Free( We all love that right now, don’t we?).

Each download contains a unique edition number, and is formatted as a 24-page PDF document—the image is split into sections which fit onto A4 paper. Hurry to get this once in a life time offer.

Heck-I say frame it and give it as a Christmas gift .

Nikki Farquharson - Mixed Media Girl

We have a hunch we will be seeing much more of the work by the young, London-based graphic designer and illustrator, Nikki Farquharson.

Her ongoing project, Mixed Media Girls, gives the viewer a lot to look at. The collages appear innocent and sweet but at the same time exude sharp, pent-up energy that does not feel altogether safe. The title of the work is also wonderfully suggestive — or not, depending on how the reader wishes to understand it.

Farquharson’s work extends from the one-dimensional world to book projects and 3D pieces in which she often ponders and twists the meaning of words and proverbs, spies on conversations, and questions established truths.

In 2007, she started the website Random Got Beautiful that is open for anyone to submit images focused on a specific color.

Farquharson’s work was on display in September in Helsinki at the YCN Alive exhibit hosted by the Helsinki-based agency Kokoro & Moi.

From John Adams to Chris Benz, doing it your way

Chris Benz is staging a fashion revolution this season. The designer makes his runway debut next week, and contemplating the traditions of the catwalk put him in mind to do something a little out of the ordinary. “Runway was a natural progression,” says Benz, “but what I always liked about the format of a presentation was that it could be really immersive. So I started thinking about ways to create atmosphere while still having a catwalk.
But I don’t want to spoil the surprise, so…” Impatient types can help themselves to fill in Benz’s blanks by noting that his show will take place at the Off Broadway theater 37 Arts—a venue that boasts the standard-issue proscenium stage and seating. That’s as much as Benz is willing to reveal about the show itself, but in the meantime, fans can chew on this: His Spring 2009 collection looks back at the history and meaning of American sportswear, taking pre-Revolutionary style as its jumping-off point.
“Yeah, I watched ‘John Adams.’ But only because my friend Mamie Gummer is in it. What’s interesting to me, beyond the details of period dress, is the attitude that underlies it—that specifically American attitude of OK, it’s time to loosen up. We’re going to do this our own way.”

Alice McCall returns to Topshop with Atari-inspired collection

Alice McCall must know she is onto a darn good thing after her debut collection for Topshop became their fastest selling line so far. Kate Moss who?

There is more good news for fans of the Aussie designer - she has been tapped to design a second collection for the high street retailer.

And the theme? Computer games.

"The second Topshop range is looking at the whole Atari computer game movement of the late eighties as the foundation for our print, and to bring a cool urban edge to pretty dresses and separates. This is very Alice McCall," said a Topshop representative.
Can anyone say 'hell yes!'?

Expect graphic-based prints featuring black, white and grey, with touches of teal and fuschia in dresses and tuxedo trousers. In stores September 25th.

McCall will open New York Fashion Week with Michael Angel this Friday.

First Look: Rebecca Taylor's Spring '09 Collection

With Fashion Week right around the corner, excitement over what the designers have in store for spring is boiling over. Rebecca Taylor's signature romantic, ultra-femme aesthetic has made her a favorite of celebrities and fashion-lovers alike. Her Spring 2009 collection stays true to her winning formula but introduces some new concepts that fans will definitely embrace with open arms. Inspired by the global traveler, flowers from her home garden, and ethnic prints with a feminine twist, this collection brings mixed tops and dresses, light weight cashmere cardigans, and versatile bohemian beaded pieces that will transition seamlessly from day to night. "The Rebecca Taylor girl for Spring 2009 is a bohemian world traveler," Rebecca describes, "she mixes her inherited couture pieces from her French actress mother with great finds gathered from exotic locations around the globe."

Saying I'm excited to see her innovative vision come to life on the runway is a MAJOR understatement!!

Christian Siriano: launching Maternity Collection

Christian Siriano is launching a maternity collection. Though he's showing his regular collection on September 11 during Fashion Week, he's already got a full maternity line under his belt for spring 2009.

Siriano teamed up with his two friends Marta Abrams and Elise Rosemarin, founders of Moody Mamas maternity clothes, to create a collection called Fierce for Moody Mamas by Christian Siriano. Fierce? It already has originality written all over it!

A Moody Mamas rep told us he signed on because he thought it would be great for a gay man to team up with two women who've never had a baby to do maternity clothes.

It seems from these sketches of Siriano's designs the threesome has created some interesting pieces for you baby makers. Already we see tummy-flattering garments like a pleated baby-doll dress and a purple wraparound sweater that could easily give A Pea in the Pod a run for its money.

The full line goes up for sale on MoodyMamas.com in the spring of 2009, but in the meantime, you can examine a few more sketches after the jump.

Gary Fernández

The name Gary Fernández has started to appear often enough to warrant a closer look. Fernández is a freelance illustrator and graphic artist based in Madrid, Spain, and currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. His client list is impressive, ranging from advertising heavies DDB, McCann Erickson, JWT and Grey to superbrands such as Coca Cola, Nokia and Camel. His illustrations have appeared in numerous magazines and books.
Fernández’s intricate, retro-esque illustrations marry of a liquid stroke with a rigid tension, which in turn projects an underlying seething mood and latent danger. For some reason, I’m thinking Dadaism and Salvador Dali mixed with the sixties’ London vibes and New York’s retro fashion illustrations. At the same time, some of his work is almost whimsical and merry; evoking images from Cirque du Soleil and old European circus posters. Whatever you see, you are irresistibly drawn into his world.
A fantastic recent example is his elaborate illustration book titled Introduction to Fantastic Girls, Future Landscapes & the Most Beautiful Birds Ever Seen, available -- possibly -- on his site in limited quantities.

Gary Fernández is also the founder and creative lead of the T-shirt brand VelvetBanana. The name VelvetBanana draws its parts from The Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol’s “banana cover” for their first album The Velvet Underground and Nico (1967).
Fernández started VelvetBanana in 2005 with the goal of redefining the “Art Rock T-shirt” by producing thematic collections.

The themes capture certain moods, songs or bands. The latest, Collection #3, is described as having “electrifying, abrasive, furious and hypnotic graphics full of energy” although the photo book of the collection appears indoorsy and tame, with clean yet fashionably brooding models photographed against a pristine white background.

The T-shirts are available at Urban Outfitters blog.urbanoutfitters.com among others.

Costume designs for Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour

Madge has teamed up again with designer/stylist Arianne Phillips. The two have worked together for about 11 years.

Phillips told Women's Wear Daily that this new tour has posed an interesting challenge.

She says, “Normally we prep in April and May, and open in June. This time, the tour begins in August. It’s a nightmare. Everyone in Italy and France is on a beach sunning themselves.”

Phillips also revealed, "Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci designed two outfits and Tom Ford provided bespoke suits for the band. Three pairs of shoes have been custom-made by Miu Miu, there are thigh-high boots courtesy of Stella McCartney, sunglasses from Moschino, and other outfits and odds and ends from Yves Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli, and Jeremy Scott."

The first references gangsta pimp and Art Deco with Givenchy(above) costumes. The dominatrix look will be featured prominently:
“It’s a theme that runs throughout her career. She’s not afraid of being hard," said the costume designer.

The second section has been termed “Old School”(first, below) and looks back at Madge's early days in New York. This section will feature some vintage prints from Keith Haring, the late graffiti artist and friend of Madonna who died of AIDS in 1990. Phillips said, “He and Madonna were friends. If he were alive, it would be his 50th birthday as well. So I thought, ‘What if we revisited that?’"

The third party will be gypsy-influenced and the final section will feature a futuristic rave look with lots of Japanese influences.

Phillips also went on to say that getting older has had little effect on Madge's sense of fashion adventure, “She always wants to push the envelope. There are no vanity considerations based on her age…She looks good in everything.”

Armani Enters the Bullfighting Ring

Giorgio Armani is having a delightfully productive summer. First, he has created a scholarship for a master’s program. Now, we’ve learned that he designed a costume for famed bullfighter Cayetano Rivera Ordoñez, for the feverish LII ‘Corrida Goyesca, taking place on September 6 in Ronda, Spain. Cayetano’s suit includes a jacket, trousers and cloak in techno satin in a signature Armani greige.

The three pieces are embroidered with sequins, glitter stones and thread, all matching the color of the primary fabric. Instrestingly enough, the Ordoñez family has a very strong history of costume courtship. Years ago, none other that Pablo Picasso designed the same costume for Cayetano’s grandfather, Antonio Ordoñez.

Thierry Mugler returns with new ready-to-wear line

The rumours are true... Thierry Mugler is making a return to the catwalk but with an all-together new capsule collection named Thierry Mugler Edition, to be unveiled next week in Paris.
In what some may say is a case of out with the old, and in with the new, this ready-to-wear collection will feature aspects of the brand's high-drama pieces but without the extravagance (boo, says I).

Nevertheless, creative director Rosemary Rodriguez personally picked pieces from the Mugler archives to rework for her latest offering.

"The idea was to keep the [principal] Mugler [codes] but bring them to another generation; to [retain] the sharp shoulders but not to overdo it; to enhance the body but to allow for movement," she said

As you can tell from the new sketch (above) big shoulders and nipped in waists are high on list, breathing new life into the brand's original vision. Want the even better news? There is also a major Thierry Mugler exhibition planned for next year at an yet-to-be-named museum. Woot!
