Although it is a little hard to tell, this is Charlotte Gainsbourg modelling in the new Balenciaga autumn/winter 2008-9 campaign, official confirmation that the French actress/singer is Nicolas Ghesquière's new muse of choice.
Gainsbourg was photographed by David Simms in the new Balenciaga flagship store in Los Angeles last April. Ghesquière banned shoppers for two days while the photo-shoot took place in the 5,000 square-foot space.
"For me, she is one of the most inspiring girls in the world," Ghesquière said. "She's really representative of what France is today. She was always so modern in her choices and her way of being. She's so iconic for me."
Following in the footsteps of previous Balenciaga face, Jennifer Connolly, Gainsbourg is photographed in a similar sleek style. On sticking to using actresses for his campaigns, as oppose to using supermodels like his peers, Ghesquière added: "They are used to playing characters and go deeper into the image. There's definitely a celebrity effect when you shoot an actress. There's a real frisson."
