Double Take

With all the fashion buzz surrounding the Sex and the City premiere and its starlettes, it came as quite the surprise to learn that the heart-shaped, strapless, silver pleated Nina Ricci dress Parker wore to the New York City premiere of her film, had already been worn on a red-carpet.

The dress was worn, just a few weeks ago, by Lauren (Davis) Santo Domingo as she accompanied Nina Ricci designer Olivier Theyskens at the Met gala on May 5th.

Talk about a major PR mistake! As someone who has a great deal of her reputation built on being in the fashion-know, Parker remarked that her “affection for the dress hasn’t changed, but what they did was so short-sighted. It’s just unethical and disappointing that they would allow the dress to be worn again.”

Parker rightfully felt deceived by both Theyskens and the President of Puig Group (which owns Nina Ricci), Mario Grauso, as they both assured her that the dress had never been worn other than at magazine shoots.

For his part, Grauso incredulously remarked that when Parker and her stylist asked if the dress had been photographed, he had no reason to mention socialite Santo Domingo, saying, “is Lauren a celebrity? It depends on how you look at it.”

Maria Sharapova signed up by Tiffany & Co.

Tennis ace Maria Sharapova's volley in to the fashion world continues as iconic New York jeweller Tiffany & Co. announced last night they have signed her to wear their jewellery during some of her most important forthcoming matches.

Sharapova, something of a fashion plate these days as well as the world's number one women's tennis player, will wear eight different sets of Tiffany earrings during eight different grand slam matches over the next two years. And while Tiffany has accessorised Maria before, this is their first official partnership with any tennis player.

"Maria Sharapova is a longtime friend of Tiffany and a champion on and off the court," said Linda Buckley, vice president of worldwide public relations for Tiffany. "It gives us great pleasure to accent her on-court look with earrings that epitomize both the quality of her championship play and Tiffany's reputation for design excellence."

The earring designs Maria wears on court will then go on sale at Tiffany & Co. in a collection called, Tiffany for Maria Sharapova.

CFDA announce guest presenters for annual awards

Another week another major fashion event in New York City. Stylish Manhattan-ites have barely recovered from the premiere of Sex and the City and they have another all important outfit to chose for the CFDA awards on Monday night.
www.awake-smile.blogspot.com
And today the Council of Fashion Designer's America headed by Diane Von Furstenberg have announced some very special guest presenters and what they will be wearing.
www.awake-smile.blogspot.com
Victoria Beckham, Eva Mendes and Maggie Gyllenhaal will co- present the night's major award, Womenswear Designer of the Year, with each of the women expected to wear a nominated designer. Posh will don Marc Jacobs , Eva Mendes the face of Calvin Klein will wear (you guessed it) Calvin Klein in honour of Creative Director Francisco Costa who is also nominated, while Gyllenhaal will sport Proenza Schouler.
www.awake-smile.blogspot.com
So, despite there only being one prize for the three designers nominated, it seems these ladies will all be winners in the wardrobe department come Monday night.

Vanity Fair: Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie looks lip-smackingly good on the the July 2008 cover issue of Vanity Fair, out next week. Here’s a preview:
On being pregnant with twins: “I love it. It makes me feel like a woman. It makes me feel that all the things about my body are suddenly there for a reason. It makes you feel round and supple, and to have a little life inside you is amazing. Also, I’m fortunate. I think some women have a different experience depend-ing on their partner. I think that affects it. I happen to be with somebody who finds pregnancy very sexy. So that makes me feel very sexy.”

On her international family: “When I was growing up I wanted to adopt, because I was aware there were kids that didn’t have parents. It’s not a humanitarian thing, because I don’t see it as a sacrifice. It’s a gift. We’re all lucky to have each other. I look at Shiloh—because, obviously, physically, she is the one that looks like Brad and I when we were little—and say, ‘If these were our brothers and sisters, how much would we have known by the time we were six that it took into our 30s and 40s to figure out?’ I suppose I’m giving them the childhood I always wished I had.”

On daughter Shiloh’s birth: “We were in this little hospital in Africa when Shi was born. I don’t think there was anybody else in the hospital. It was just a little cottage, the three of us. It ended up being the greatest thing…. I had a C-section and I found it fascinating. I didn’t find it a sacrifice and I didn’t find it a painful experience. I found it a fascinating miracle of what a body can do.”

On nannies never sleeping over: “We don’t ever have anybody spend the night. We may have to adjust that when the next one comes. But we do have ladies that work with us, and they’re also from different cultures and back-grounds. One lady’s a Vietnamese teacher—wonderful. One is of Congolese descent from Bel-gium. Another is from the States and is really creative and does art programs.”

On artists as parents: “Artists raise their kids differently,” she said. “We communicate to the point where we probably annoy our children. We have art around the house, we have books, we go to plays, we talk. Our focus is art and painting and dress-up and singing. It’s what we love. So I think you can see how artists in some way raise other artists.”

Chanel

Chanel opened the doors of their brand new concept boutique in Robertson Boulevard, Los Angeles last night and the stars - mostly clad in black - came out to play. Rachel Bilson, Katy Perry, Amber Valletta, Leighton Meester and Michelle Trachtenberg kept things très noir except for a few pops of colour in the form of Rachel's clutch, Katy's floral headpiece and Michelle's metallic grey skirt.
What we want to know is: who is the best?

Supermodels are back!

I had been waiting for one of the big fashion publications to fully address what many fashion fans have known for a while that the supermodel has returned... big time! WWD have led with a mother of an article today discussing the renewed appeal of some of our favourite '90s cover girls, thanks to some pretty massive ad campaigns of late - Claudia for Chanel and Salvatore Ferragamo, Linda for Prada, Naomi for YSL, Christy for Escada, and everyone for Louis Vuitton. They might have seemed done and dusted, but over a decade later they're still banking the big cheques.

"At the end of the Nineties, there was a [supermodel] overdose and people wanted to see actresses, but maybe the fact that actresses don't really have a real relationship with fashion is driving [their return]," said Didier Fernandez of DNA Models, who reps for Evangelista, Nadja Auermann and Amber Valletta.

Perhaps we really are just fed up of seeing actresses and songstresses trying to be models. After all, Eva Mendes's recent gig with Calvin Klein doesn't seem to fanning too much excitement. Fashion is a fickle game, of course. What comes full circle, often back pedals again before taking in a whole new direction.

The latest Chanel campaign will mark Karl Lagerfeld's third consecutive with Claudia Schiffer. So why, when he could have anyone he wants, does Karl keep going back?

"Time makes them sometimes even more interesting," he said. "I work with them because they are great and right even for this moment. They are still young women with nice faces and great personal, modern style. They are, and stay, irreplaceable."

'Irreplaceable' certainly seems like a fitting description for the supermodel of today. So this just leaves one lingering question, with Marc Jacobs vowing this week not to use celebs like Victoria Beckham anymore, could we soon be seeing Cindy Crawford or Elle Macpherson on his ad books? He did it for Vuitton...

Hockey to Vogue Sean Avery

He may be more accustomed to slapping pucks around the ice, but it looks like New York Rangers star Sean Avery is set to trade in his skates for something a little more stylish.

The hockey player — and former boyfriend of Elisha Cuthbert — will be taking up residence at Vogue for a sought-after internship with the magazine.

And while his new role may be a little surprising, he treats his love of the fashion world with the same aggression he shows in the rink. Avery even got up the courage to write a personal letter to editor Anna Wintour requesting the intern position with the magazine. And it looks like his his persistence paid off.

A Vogue spokesperson confirms to PEOPLE that Avery got the job, and will “work with senior editors on various projects, help research photo shoots, features on individuals, and non-fashion-related features.” But what about the typical intern grunt work made famous in The Devil Wears Prada? Sounds like even a famous hockey star can’t escape that side of the job.

The rep confirms that Avery will work on all aspects of the magazine — including running errands. But Avery may have already scored one of the perks that every intern dreams of — he’s rumored to be attending the next fashion week with editor-at-large Hamish Bowles. We can’t wait to see him in the front row

Roberto Cavalli interview

When it comes to speaking his mind, Roberto Cavalli doesn't hold back. This has never been more apparent than in a recent interview with the Telegraph's Celia Walden.

Conducted on board Cavalli's luxury yacht in Cannes, the Italian designer gives his views on everything from Madonna, to Kate Moss's collections for Topshop.

Roberto Cavalli on Madonna... "She is not nice with anyone: she doesn't know how to be nice."

On Victoria Beckham... "Sadly, now that she's in LA, it's difficult to see one another. We talk all the time on the phone, though. She is such a fantastic woman."

On the way women dress today... "There is a real vulgarity in the way women dress at the moment. They show off too much and try too hard. They don't understand where the line is between sexy and vulgar. I know where that line is."

On rumours that he is gay... "I am not gay. I detest men - dressed or naked - but women..."
On English style... "The English - oh my God. I shouldn't say this because I live part of the time in London, but they are on a par with the Swiss stylistically."

On his own achievements... "In 1970 I was the number one designer in the world; people like Armani were nothing next to me."

On celebrity diffusion collections... "I'm very much against all these celebrities doing diffusion lines. Do I suddenly get up in the morning and say that I am going to start a singing career, with the horrible voice that I have? That's what these girls do when they show the world how horrible their fashion ranges are. Money is the most corrosive aspect of life today because it means that all attention to detail is forgotten. Kate Moss's collection was badly made, stupid and bland; you see things like that everywhere. You can't just buy things for the label - it's ridiculous."

Like I said... no holding back

Eva Mendes & Calvin Klein

It was just a couple weeks ago that recently-rehabbed actress Eva Mendes appeared in Vogue Germany -- for the most part without her clothes. And now, word 'round the Internet is that the star's latest ad campaign is similarly scandalous.
n
The TV spots are for a new Calvin Klein fragrance called Secret Obsession, and apparently clearly show Eva "having illicit thoughts." So illicit, in fact, that they're making network TV sensors very uncomfortable -- which means the ads will likely never see the light of day.
n
According to a spokesman for Coty (the CK subsidiary that produced the fragrance): "There's a lot of skin, but it's tastefully done. We wanted to do a provocative ad. But we we're not trying to be raunchy. We're going to fight [the ban]."Sure, they can fight -- but unless the content changes, chances are high that Coty and CK aren't going to win.
n
Instead you can expect a watered-down version in late summer/early fall (when the fragrance launches), or, if you're lucky, a sneak peak at the unedited version when someone leaks it on YouTube.

Avon

We mentioned earlier this month that Bond girl Gemma Arterton was forced to pass on a campaign with Rimmel because of contractual commitments with Avon. Well now we can reveal exactly what those commitments are...

The stunning actress is fronting the newest fragrance campaign from Avon - Bond Girl 007 - a partnership with James Bond entertainment, and what is said to be the biggest global fragrance launch of the year.

Due to launch in October to coincide with the release of the latest Bond blockbuster, Quantum of Solace, Arterton will appear in print and television advertising, as well as on the cover of Avon's brochure. Samples will also be available a select movie theatres worldwide to promote the perfume.

"I am proud to be a part of the Bond girl legacy and Avon's Bond Girl 007 fragrance embodies the qualities of what a Bond girl represents - it's sexy, empowering and iconic," said Arterton.

With Reese Witherspoon in their Tv ads & Patrick Dempsey fronting their newest men's fragrance, I'd say that it's shaping up to be a pretty good year for Avon.

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs swung by this fair city yesterday, to give a talk at Central Saint Martins. So of course, chaos ensued.
According to Vogue.com, tickets apparently had sold out within 45 minutes, queues of hopefuls snaked around the block just in case there were any returns and fanatical fans attempted to break in backstage while he spoke. Oh what I would have given to have seen all that goin' down!
'
Those who turned up to hear him speak (and that included names such as Giles Deacon, Christopher Kane and Jonathan Saunders) heard tales of him taking his early designs to Vogue's Andre Leon Talley when he was just starting out; how he hired a certain Tom Ford to be his design assistant; and his initial fear at taking the design helm at Louis Vuitton. Fascinating stuff. You can read more at Vogue.com.

Alexander McQueen relaunches ad campaign starring Alice Gibb

Chloë Sevigny

After all the hype surrounding her début collection for Opening Ceremony, it looks like Chloë Sevigny may be about to do it all over again, with a new menswear range on the cards.

Word on the street is that the Big Love actress is planning on collaborating with the US label again on a range for guys, that will also be available in girl versions.

"Not only did I want to do something for the guys in my life, but a lot of my girlfriends prefer to wear men's stuff," Sevigny told Style File.

"I think what they like about men's clothes is the fit. So I don't want to change that. It'll be a new challenge."

The female versions will not have any different tailoring, they will simply be available in smaller sizes. Sevigny also revealed that had it not been for the writer's strike, which left her in New York for fourth months, there might have been been a follow-up collection much sooner.

"If I had known that I [was going to have] that time off, I probably would have thought about doing another collection. But I'm really looking forward to doing something completely different, too," she added.

Personally, I am predicting rockabilly style blazers, punk-influenced t-shirts and perhaps some flannel shirts. Can't wait!

There are three things we have learnt from this video of Naomi Campbell on the set of Ugly Betty, where she plays in the company softball game between Mode and Elle:

3. She needs a brain.

Audrey Tautou Channels Chanel

Audrey Tautou, the French gamine, is best known as Tom Hanks side-kick in The Da Vinci Code or for roaming the streets of Montmartre in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s film Amélie. While Amélie was a whimsical portrayal of modern Paris life, Tautou’s new role will depict a far different portrait of Paris. Tautou will be making a turn as the infamous Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in a new biopic of the fashion icon’s life and love affairs before she became a designer- Coco avant Chanel.

French director Anne Fontaine told Le Film Francais movie journal about the project: ''I wanted to follow the interior path of this young woman who was poor, without education, but who had an uncommon personality that was ahead of her time.” The film is scheduled to be released in 2009

Fittingly, Chanel has confirmed that Tautou has been appointed their new brand ambassador. She is slated to be the new face of Chanel No. 5 perfume; replacing Nicole Kidman and teaming up again with Amélie director Jeunet to create a new short film/ advertisement due out early next year.

In her first appearance after the announcement of her new gig, Tautou attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute gala dressed in Chanel Haute Couture. I imagine that we will be seeing her at events in little else for some time, and must admit that I am quite jealous!
