Could Stella and Vivienne be designing for the Queen's guards?

Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood could be set to re-design the Queen's guards uniforms.

The tall black bearskin hats sported by the Queen's Guards are something of a London landmark but have always caused controversy amongst animal lovers as one bear has to be killed for each hat made. Animal rights campaigners from PETA have long been pushing for an alternative to be used - and now Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood could be stepping in to help.
This week PETA are set to meet with officials from the Ministry of Defence to put forward

proposals for alternative materials and designs that could be used. Long-time vegetarian Stella McCartney and British fashion stalwart Vivienne Westwood are just two of the designers who PETA have on standby to design something new and improved if the M.O.D. give them the go-ahead. We can't wait to see what they come up with and hope a Stella-designed faux fur alternative can be found for the Queen's guards.

New Fashion Show for BBC 2: 'British Style Genius'

Kate Moss with Sir Philip Green

The onslaught of fashion-oriented TV programming continues with the announcement that BBC Two will soon be screening a style series of their own.

First off, we have Channel 4's Gok's Fashion Fix, the upcoming Frock Me! with Alexa Chung for T4, Abbey Clancey's The Fashion Project with Geroge Lamb for ITV2, and now British Style Genius for BBC Two.

It's like TV land just woke up one day and realised that there is a mass-market audience who like clothes.

Well, for a starters it is a documentary format, which examines how style in Britain has been influenced and shaped by the many different trends over the years. It will look at all the varying aspects from high street to high-end couture, from Savile Row tailoring to "chav", exploring what makes the British sense of style of today so unique from the rest of the world. It will also feature contributions from Twiggy, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, and Kate Moss who will appear in meetings with Topshop boss Sir Philip Green, and trying on clothes.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD DESIGNS GRAD GOWNS

In honor of their new capacity to grant degrees, King's College London has recruited Dame Vivienne Westwood to design their graduation dress.

A student-walked runway show on July 3 debuted the British designer's 20 gowns paired with hoods instead of traditional caps.

Graduates will wear colors representing their colleges and their degree levels (fuchsia for the dental school, silver for the law school, etc.). All gowns will feature a button with a lion, the school's mascot.

In 2007, King's College invited the innovative Westwood to design the collection, which the class of 2008 will wear later in July. Ede & Ravenscroft will produce the gowns.
