The Smith Westerns in V Magazine #69

V Magazine: “New Band: The Smith Westerns, Nominated by Ryan McGinley”
In the year and a half since they released their self-titled debut (most of which was recorded in Kakacek’s basement), the trio has toured the world with fellow indie rockers Girla, been kicked out of Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg (reportedly for peeing in the garbage cans), and won the affection of influential fans like Ryan McGinley, who recently sat down with the trio in New York City to talk about their past tour, new album, and overall rock aesthetic.

Sam Adams by Hedi Slimane in V Magazine #69

V Magazine: “New Rapper: Sam Adams, Nominated by Hedi Slimane”
The 23-year-old rap sensation boasts the kind of success story that both inspires and infuriates other aspiring musicians. When asked how a college student from Boston goes from being unknown to selling out 3,000 capacity venues in less than a year, Adams himself can only laugh and say, “You know, it just kind of happened.”

Coco Sumner covers ASOS Magazine October Issue‏

ASOS Magazine – The Music Issue
Coco Sumner stars on the ASOS cover and inside
Music’s Most Stylish – While fashion will always be our first love, music isn’t far behind. To celebrate, we asked some of our favourite artists to style themselves and inspire our wardrobes. From cover girl Coco Sumner, to man of the moment, Tinie Tempah, music’s best dressed come out to play.

Coco Sumner
“She’s no chatterbox, but Sting’s daughter lets her electrifying stage performances do the talking for her…”
Photographer: Thomas Giddings
Editor: Francesca Babb
Art Director: Marina Ansell

On how she started her music career: “Music was always something I was going to get into, but I never wanted to be a singer. I thought singing was really naff, I thought singers in general were naff. I just wanted to be the person behind music – be in a band or play drums or write. There were always guitars hanging around the house growing up, and a piano, but I kept music very much to myself. I wanted it to be my little secret, it just felt more special that way. At first I wouldn’t let anyone hear me play, I supposed I was embarrassed. But I started writing and singing the songs to myself, then began to play them to friends. And that’s how it started.”

On her stage presence: “I feel very at home performing. I don’t know why, because it’s quite a weird place to feel your happiest. But I’m not shy, I just don’t say very much.”

On her lifestyle as a musician: “It’s physically exhausting as much as it’s emotionally exhausting. You need to take care of yourself, and I haven’t. But I’ve made a rule now, that if I have a day to spare I have to get out of London because I find it quite suffocating. If I have a couple of hours off, I could just sit and stare at a fly on a wall. Or I make lists. A ‘To Do’ list, or a list of what I want to be when I grow up.”
On her greatest passion: “I think food is probably my next favourite thing in the world. I make a really good roast chicken, it’s all about the timing and the lemon up the bottom. And pasta with loads of salt and olive oil in the water and a good pomodoro sauce.”

On her goals: “My aim is to write film scores. If someone gives me the chance or trusts me with a film. And I wanted to be a criminal lawyer, but that never happened, although I’m still interested in campaigning for human rights, helping people that don’t really have a voice to stand up for themselves. I’d like to feel that I’ve helped someone.”

Hayley Williams [Paramore]
The flame-haired singer channels her anger into charismatic stage performances and songs
“Hayley was 14 and at school in Franklin, Tennessee when she and bandmates Josh and Zac Farro, Taylor York and Jeremy Davis were signed to a management company. They’ve since had huge global success.”
Janelle Monáe
Surrealism, theatrical costume and out-of-body experiences – Janelle brings drama to music
“P.Diddy’s protégé, Janelle Monae, 24, may cut a pint-sized silhouette but her energetic stage presence, powerful vocals and one-of-a-kind style put her head and shoulders above the competition.”

Robyn
The queen of Euro electro-pop doesn’t believe in a low-key return to the chart limelight…
“After a three-year break, serial chart topper Robyn, 21, has been making up for lost time by releasing not-one, not two, but three albums this year. Collaborating with the likes of Snoop Dogg and Coco Sumner, the Swedish pop star has kept us captivated with her sweet styles and a string of dancefloor hits.”
Sunday Girl
The female solo artist market is fiercely competitive but the posh goth lover is giving it her best shot
“From pet shop girl to pop star, Jade Williams [Sunday Girl], 21, is grabbing the attention of taste makers and music bloggers, thanks to her catchy electro-tinged tunes and classic vintage style.”

Sky Ferreira
The L.A.-raised, New York-based singer looks to icons from Bowie to Brooke Shields for inspiration
“Having made waves as a blogger, actress and model, Sky Ferreira, 18, is establishing herself as a credible pop star. Penning her own tunes and working with the likes of photographer Rankin, we can’t get enough of this multi-tasking, multi-talented teenager.”
The Like
The meticulously styled quartet worship the Swinging ‘60s but aren’t afraid to mix it up in the mosh pit
“With a new line-up and a string of designers queuing to dress them, ‘60s pop quartet The Like have settled into their stride and perfected their polished look – a nod to Twiggy, mods and minidresses.”
